How we work
Standards
The principles our writers and editors hold themselves to.
Accuracy
We verify what we publish. Facts are checked against primary sources whenever possible; quotations are accurate and in context. When we can’t confirm something, we say so or we don’t publish it.
News and opinion
News articles report what happened. Opinion pieces argue a point of view and are clearly labeled. The views in opinion pieces belong to their authors, not to The Michigan Review.
Fairness
People and institutions we write about critically are given a reasonable chance to respond before publication. We don’t grant anonymity casually; when we do, we tell readers why.
Independence
Editorial decisions are made by our student editors alone. Advertisers, donors and subjects of coverage do not review or approve stories before publication.
Images and AI
Photographs are credited. Illustrations or images created with generative AI tools are labeled as such in their captions, and are never presented as photographs of real events.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it and say so. Corrections are appended to the article with the date of the change. To report an error, email editors@michiganreview.com with “Correction” in the subject line and a link to the article.
